Richard 3 1581

Written while the 17th Earl of Oxford in the tower,

26 references to the tower in this play.
The Howards were enemies of Henry 7, as well as Elizabeth
Herberts, Talbots, Stanleys were all Lancastrians, Blount and Tressel mentioned in the play. Oxford is reminding the Queen of his own loyalty and his friends.
Our knowledge of this quarrel is from letters written home by the French and Spanish ambassadors.
Similarities to a letter of June 1581 from Oxford to Burghley.
“shadow/substance” comparison
“Humbly complaining to her deity , got my lord chamberlain his liberty”
“The loss of such a lord includes all harms”
